Heart Health:
Heart disease prevention through supplementation

HEART HEALTH AND HEART DISEASE

The heart is the largest muscle we have in our body, yet we abuse it and take it for granted. Without the heart, we are in deep trouble. Here are a few things you might want to think about when considering the question, “Do I take good care of my heart?”

Do you often use convenience foods or eat at fast food restaurants due to cost, convenience or lack of time?

Do artificial or imitation food products often become part of your diet because they are low in fat or cholesterol?

If yes, then a good, researched, complete multi-vitamin would be good nutritional insurance.

Does your lifestyle allow you to consistently maintain adequate protein intake and at the same time, keep your cholesterol consumption below 400 mg a day?

If not, then a balanced protein with a full range of amino acids would be a great substitute for some of the animal protein in your diet.

How are you doing on the fruit and vegetable consumption? Do you consume at least 2-3 serving of fruits every day?

If not, you are a typical American and not getting the vitamin C you need plus the antioxidants

And how about eating the 3-5 servings of fresh vegetables and 6- 11 servings of whole grains each day?

If you say yes, then you body is getting the fiber and antioxidants it needs, but… I doubt if you are getting all that you need. We should have 30-35 gms of fiber a day. Most of us get 7 to 10 gms.

Our heart will benefit from the walk we take each day, especially if we can make it a bit brisk. Cutting out the FAT foods we eat are a must.

Something more the body needs to help good heart health includes a healthy colon. Most of us don’t have enough of the friendly bacteria in our intestines. Friendly bacteria produce substances that lower serum cholesterol levels, reduce the risk of colon cancer, and strengthen our immune system.

How many live bacteria are in YOUR colon or in the product you are taking?

Our body naturally makes CoQ10 but as the body ages, the production of this substance is decreased. It is one of those “aging” things. I recommend a quality CoQ10. The need for this is increased by the statin class of cholesterol lowering drugs.

For my money, I trust one company to give me a stable product, one my body can use without taking the whole bottle at one time and one that is balanced synergistically with another antioxidant which is vital for the heart health.

Earlier I mentioned fiber and for what reason you ask? It has been found that the right fiber lowers serum cholesterol, helps stabilize blood sugar levels and reduces the risk of some cancers.

Studies also show that garlic lowers serum cholesterol levels, but only if it contains the active ingredients found in fresh garlic. Again, I only know one company that retains the “real garlic” in their garlic tablet.

Now, there is one last thing to think about. Studies have shown a newly discovered risk factor for heart disease is homocysteine.

To prevent this we want to have enough of the Vitamin B, in a balance, as this will decrease the blood level of the homocysteine. Most of us can not get the B complex (all 8 B’s in a balance) from the food we eat. Stress depletes our B as well as does the eating of processed white flour and sugar.

That is it in a nutshell as they say. Once again, there is no magic button. Good health takes focus, caring, wanting good health and taking good supplements.
